While we are usually preoccupied with conformation and performance dogs, once in a while we hear the story of a dog that is special in the original capacity of dogs -- as a true and loyal companion.

We've recently had the opportunity to hear the story of one such dog, an unusual ally in a foreign, and often hostile land.

Written by:  Dr. Carleton Phillips, Advisor on Nonproliferation, Office of National Security Affairs, CPA Baghdad , Iraq and Office of Proliferation Threat Reduction, United States Department of State, Washington , D.C.

Xuxha (pronounced Shusha) is a working dog with flowing side gait and flawless foot timing, but you won’t see her in the show ring this summer.  Xuxha started out as a scrawny, tick-covered Baghdad street dog used to war and fearful of humans. Hired off the street, groomed, well-fed, and reintroduced to human companionship, she now is chief watch dog for the Iraq International Center for Science and Industry - a State Department Project in Baghdad.  Xuxha can be credited with alerting her American and Iraqi friends with ‘trouble-brewing’ warnings before human senses were aware.  Xuxha is busy rearing a litter of five plump pups all of whom plan on following her into the ‘working dog’ world.
