What can I say about Jake? He was not a champion. He was not a stud dog.
He did not tend flocks. But he was a great many more important things.
Jake was beautiful -- maybe not in some show dog manner, but beautiful
nonetheless. He loved to have his bath and would stand for hours being
"made beautiful." Jake was a best friend. A small boy's favorite
conspirator. A leaping-off-the-dock swimming fanatic. A beachcomber's
assistant. A football player who could "go out for a pass" and catch
on the fly. A softer mouthed, better bird dog than the Goldens he hunted
with. A barn helper. A bandana wearer who chose his own bandanas. An avid and
animated fireworks watcher. A fan of "Santa Dog," who loved nothing
more than his Christmas morning stocking. A partner in crime. A watch dog who
knew just which people to mistrust. A footwarmer. A dog with more heart than I
knew was possible. A laze around the house companion. A shoulder to
cry on. A walking partner. "Uncle Jake" to generations of Rainyday
puppies. A "fly boy" who loved to watch the remote control airplanes
at the flying field. A wiggle-butt with a loud "woo woo woo."
Our Jakey Boo Bear.
Jake was a mother's day present and shadow for Linda, a best friend and
growing up partner for John, a companion for Kate and a barn buddy and
airplane flying partner for Carl. He was a teacher to countless naughty
puppies, a tireless ball player for Parker, and the smartest dog ever
born.
