Elyssa's teacher assigned an essay which Elyssa chose to write about her new puppy. We were thrilled when Elyssa chose to share her essay with us :-)
The Day I Got My Puppy Getting my puppy Nemo was fun and exciting. It all started when I was looking on AKC.com, a website all about different breeds of dogs. I was trying to find a dog breed that was cute and loyal because our other dog, Glacier, is getting older. I first saw a breed called an Alaskan Malamute and absolutely fell in love with it. Its coat is like a moon shining on white snow, making it gray and like the darkness of a black forest. I studied the breed for two, no three months before I showed my mom. She looked at what I found on the Alaskan Malamute. Then she said something I could not bare to hear, “No the dog is too big.” “We do not have a big enough backyard.” I felt like all hope of ever even considering a new dog was gone. In my mind I said “I won’t give up, not now not ever!” The next day I got back on the computer and with my head held high I began searching on the AKC website. After looking for hours I found a dog breed called an Australian Shepherd. All of the things I read about it fit perfectly with our life style. On the AKC website it said “the Australian Shepherd is loyal, great with children and protective.” My sister’s boyfriend owns an Australian Shepherd and he said they are wonderful dogs and they will follow you around in every room. I took a deep breath and called my mom to come look at what I had found. As she came up the stairs into the computer room my heart started beating faster and faster. She looked at the computer screen and said “I could consider having an Australian Shepherd.” Finally, the answer I had been longing for forever. In a calm voice which was hard to say I said “I’ll look online to see if I can find a good breeder.” “Now, Elyssa don’t count on getting a puppy. I told you I might consider it” said my mom. After my mom left the room I erased what she said from my mind and started jumping up and down in excitement thinking nothing could ruin my day. In the middle of July my mom came up to my room and told me something amazing. She said “Elyssa, I have been talking with your dad and he said we can get a puppy around Christmas time.” I started thinking to myself about all of the things we needed to get for a new puppy such as toys, food, shampoo, a bed, a cage. The more I thought the more excited I became. For the next few weeks I searched the internet looking for a good breeder that was in Texas. I found a website called Rainyday Aussies.com. “Aussie” is a nickname for Australian Shepherd. The owner’s names are Kate and Linda. Linda is Kate’s mom. For four whole weeks my mom called Kate to see if there would be a puppy available from a litter that was born on June 28th. The website had pictures of all six puppies. There was only one girl and her name was Flower. She was the puppy I wanted. Two days before we were to go on vacation I begged my mom to call Kate. My mom said “Elyssa we are about to go on our vacation, what good would it do to call now?” I wanted to have my mom ask about what things we needed to get for the puppies. My mom replied “Elyssa I don’t even know if they are going to have a puppy available.” That night my mom emailed Kate and told her we were leaving the next day on vacation and we would be back in a couple of days. Almost the entire time we were on vacation at the beach, I thought of Flower. But good news would soon turn into bad news. About four days after we got home, Kate emailed us and said something horrible! The email read “Dear Donna, Flower, Pete, Teddy, Eddy and Merlin are not available for adoption but Nemo still is. Please email us back if you are interested in purchasing Nemo.” My mom called for me to come upstairs. She said “Elyssa I need to tell you something.” I yelled back “yea mom, just one second.” As I came up the stairs I thought my mom was going to tell me that we got Flower but I was wrong. My mom told me about the email Kate sent and about Nemo. She asked me if I wanted to buy Nemo. I said “Tell Kate we will think about it.” At first I felt sad, like someone took away my favorite toy, but when I was in bed I thought about Nemo. I thought about how different it would be having a boy instead of a girl dog. I decided that there wasn’t such a big difference. Maybe a boy dog might bark more but I didn’t care. The next day I asked my mom if we could get Nemo. "You really want Nemo?” my mom asked. “Yes I do” I said. My mom paused is silence and said “all right, I’ll go email Kate.” “Yes!” I said. It felt like ten pounds of weight were lifted off my shoulders. After several emails between Kate and my mom we made arrangements to pick up Nemo. The breeders live in Lubbock. Because my dad works for Continental Airlines, we are able to fly easily on short notice. It was decided that we would get up at 5:00 am and arrive in Lubbock at 10:00 am. Kate would pick us up from the airport and we would go back to her house to get acquainted with Nemo and to play with him. Everything went as planned and when we got to Kate’s house all of Nemo’s brothers and sister were outside with him. Kate told me to call out “Here puppy, puppy” to get Nemo’s attention. He came running to me and I reached down and picked him up and he started licking my face. I thought he was the cutest puppy I have ever seen. Then we went inside and I was able to play with Nemo for the rest of the time I was there. On the way back to the airport Nemo whined the whole way. When we got to the airport Kate said good bye and told us she would be in Austin in October for a dog show and would love to see us. When we were on the airplane flying back to Austin Nemo whined a little bit and I was nervous about it but he soon fell asleep. We got home around 9:30 pm. I gave Nemo some food and water out of his new bowl. My sister and her boyfriend were there and everybody loved him. I put him in his new cage with his new blanket and his new toys. He soon fell fast asleep. Nemo is almost four months old and has learned some commands like, sit, stay, come and lay down. So far, he has been a great additional to the family and we will always love him. |
